Heres my opening powerrankings. Feel free to add your comments.
1. Pittsburgh (0-0) - The champs open as #1.
2. Cincinnati (0-0) - Carson Palmer looks great and the Bengals are my pick to win the AFC Championship but you have to start the champs out at #1.
3. Dallas (0-0) - We are a very talented team this year. I look for us to represent the NFC in Miami.
4. Seattle (0-0) - If the Seahawks can overcome the Super Bowl Losers Curse and the Madden Jinx then they will challenge us for the NFC title.
5. Carolina (0-0) - The Panthers are the most talented teams in the NFC South but their brutal schedule may prevent them from so much as making the playoffs.
6. Indianapolis (0-0) - Despite the loss of Edgerrin James, the Colts should be able to win the South again. Once they get to the playoffs however, Dungy and Manning will end up on the short end once again.
7. New England (0-0) - Tom Brady. Period. If the Pats defense is better than I anticipate then the Patriots may be headed to the Super Bowl again.
8. Chicago (0-0) - The Bears defense alone will win them the NFC North, but one dimensional teams do not fare well in the post season.
9. Denver (0-0) - With the retirement of Willie Roaf, the Chargers getting rid of Drew Brees, and the Raiders being the Raiders, the Broncos should be able to win the West easily.
10. NY Giants (0-0) - They looked awfully impressive in the preseason. New York may be headed to the post season again.
11. Tampa Bay (0-0) - The Bucs are a really good team, unfortunately they have one of the toughest schedules in the NFL and they will have to fight their ass off to make the playoffs.
12. Miami (0-0) - Nick Saban has worked miracles with a team that was 4-12 a couple years ago. If Daunte Culpepper recovers quickly then Miami has a good shot at winning the weak AFC East.
13. Washington (0-0) - The Redskins looked terrible in the preseason. They may go backwards this season.
14. Philadelphia (0-0) - Philly impressed me this preseason. They might muster a playoff berth this year but they aren't winning the East.
15. Jacksonville (0-0) - The Jags went backwards this off season. I would be shocked if they are as good this year as they were last year.
16. Arizona (0-0) - The Cards could sneak into the playoffs due to the NFC East beating up on each other and the Bucs having a really tough schedule.
17. Minnesota (0-0) - The Vikes are one of the many playoff contenders in the NFC this season.
18. Kansas City (0-0) - The Chiefs were a trendy playoff pick until Willie Roaf retired. Now they will struggle to claim a .500 record.
19. Baltimore (0-0) - The Ravens look good on paper but Steve McNair is old and injury prone. Look for Baltimore to collapse near season's end.
20. St. Louis (0-0) - I agree with Walt that the Rams are underrated. They have a high powered offense and now they have a coach that will actually run the ball and can manage the clock and his challenges.
21. Atlanta (0-0) - This is it for Michael Vick. He's either going to learn the West Coast Offense this year or the Falcons are going to have to begin a rebuilding process.
22. New Orleans (0-0) - Reggie Bush and the Saints are going to be much better this season but they didn't look very good in the preseason.
23. San Diego (0-0) - Had they retained Drew Brees this offseason I would be favoring them to make the playoffs.
24. Detroit (0-0) - There are many questions surrounding the Lions this season. They're either going to be playoff contenders or one of the worst teams in the NFC. Right now Im leaning towards the latter.
25. Cleveland (0-0) - I had the Browns much higher than this before Training Camp started and they suffered so many injuries and suspensions. Im begginning to think that this team is cursed.
26. NY Jets (0-0) - Eric Mangini made the right decision going with Chad Pennington but the Jets are nowhere close to the playoff teams that Pennington led in '02 and '04.
27. Oakland (0-0) - Gosh the NFL has alot of bad teams this year. I had trouble selecting who would be next in line.
28. Buffalo (0-0) - The Bills are awful. Marv Levy has alot of work to do.
29. San Francisco (0-0) - I think Mike Nolan will turn the Niners around eventually but it wont be this year.
30. Tennessee (0-0) - Vince Young will probably struggle in his first year getting adapted to the NFL game but he will be a success some day.
31. Houston (0-0) - The loss of Domanick Davis makes the Texans just that much worse.
32. Green Bay (0-0) - Brett Favre should have retired. He's coming back to play for one of the worst teams in NFL history.
Looks pretty good, but I think San Diego should be a bit higher. I watched every Chargers preseason game, and Philip Rivers looks like the real deal. It'll take him a few weeks to get accustomed to playing in this league, but once he does, I'm expecting big things.
If Phillip Rivers impresses me in the first game then San Diego will go much higher. As of now, they are an otherwise talented team starting a rookie quarterback. They may actually have problems with Oakland in River's first game.
1. Cincinnati (1-0) - Carson Palmer was great against Kansas City and the Bengals' defense looks like the real deal. Cincinnati is poised to make a Super Bowl run.
2. Pittsburgh (1-0) - I was not very impressed by them against Miami, but keeping in mind that Roethlisberger was out they still deserve to be in Top 2.
3. Chicago (1-0) - Although it was against the Packers, the Bears had a great showing in Week 1. With how bad Seattle and all of the NFC East looked this week, the Bears have a great shot at winning the NFC.
4. Baltimore (1-0) - The Ravens look much better than I thought they would be. However, they are still old and are a McNair injury away from their season being over.
5. Indianapolis (1-0) - With Edge gone the Colts will have to pass on just about every down, Peyton Manning may break his 49 touchdown mark this season.
6. Jacksonville (1-0) - I'll give it to the Jags, their offense was better than I thought it would be, with that said, had Parcells and Bledsoe not given them the game we would have won easily.
7. Seattle (1-0) - Seattle won ugly against Detroit but they still won. Walt's probably right, the Seahawks were looking ahead.
8. San Diego (1-0) - Phillip Rivers looks like the real deal and LaDanian Tomlinson will continue to be LaDanian Tomlinson. San Diego has a great shot at winning what appears to be an extremely weak AFC West division.
9. New England (1-0) - The Patriots will struggle to make the playoffs with Deion Branch in Seattle.
10. Dallas (0-1) - If we played Jacksonville 10 times we would beat them 8 times.
11. NY Giants (0-1) - The Giants were probably the most impressive NFC East team this weekend- too bad they had to play the Colts.
12. Minnesota (1-0) - Minnesota looked like a playoff team in their win at Washington.
13. Arizona (1-0) - Good and bad for the Cards. Kurt Warner was throwing touchdowns but he was also turning the ball over.
14. Philadelphia (1-0) - I wasn't very impressed at all by Philly's showing in Houston. I thought that they were going to win by alot more.
15. St. Louis (1-0) - I think the Rams win over Denver was more the Broncos being bad than it was the Rams being good.
16. Atlanta (1-0) - I think everyone scratched their head when they saw Atlanta 20, Carolina 6. Atlanta appears to be a solid squad after their win in Carolina but it may have been nothing more than a Week One aberration.
17. Miami (0-1) - Daunte Culpepper was in 2005 form on Thursday night. That spells trouble for the Dolphins.
18. Denver (0-1) - Looks like the real Jake Plummer is back and that odd Jake Plummer that didn't make mistakes last year disappeared again.
19. Washington (0-1) - Washington looked almost as bad against Minnesota as they did against everyone in the preseason. The NFC East looked like a very mediocre division this week.
20. New Orleans (1-0) - Reggie Bush is a monster. I think it will take a year before this team is ready for the playoffs but they're off to a hot start.
21. Carolina (0-1) - Yes I know that Steve Smith was out but what about that great defense everyone talked about or Jake Delhomme or Keyshawn Johnson? Where were they when the Panthers lost their dominance over the Falcons?
22. Detroit (0-1) - Detroit was very impessive in nearly beating Seattle but that was probably the best game the Lions will play all season long.
23. Kansas City (0-1) - The Chiefs have trouble winning on the road so if they have any shot of making the playoffs they have to win nearly every game at home. They didn't get off to such a great start.
24. Tampa Bay (0-1) - Tampa was dominated by Baltimore in every phase of the game in their house.
25. NY Jets (1-0) - Chad Pennington looked pretty good against Tennessee but it was against Tennessee. Beat New England next week (which actually could happen) and I'll be a true believer.
26. Buffalo (0-1) - The Bills were surprisingly competitive at New England but I think it was just an aberration.
27. San Francisco (0-1) - As aforementioned, the 49ers will be in the playoff chase next year. As of now, they are still the John York 49ers.
28. Cleveland (0-1) - Poor Cleveland. They were supposed to make strides this year.
29. Houston (0-1) - The Texans were pretty competitive for the most part against Philadelphia but they are still one of the worst teams in the NFL.
30. Tennessee (0-1) - How bad are the Titans? They lost at home to the Jets!
31. Green Bay (0-1) - As awful as Green Bay looked against Chicago there was one team that stood out even worse and that team is.........
32. Oakland (0-1) - I thought the Chargers-Raiders game had a great chance of being an upset. Instead, Oakland gets blown out. I guess this is what happens when your team captains are Warren Sapp and Randy Moss.
I wouldn't put Denver so low. Remember what happened in their first game last year? They were blown out by Miami. The Broncos will win big against Kansas City.
I cant see Denver bouncing back the same way they did last year. Jake Plummer has gone back to his old ways. I do think they will beat Kansas City by double digits this week, but I also think they will finish with a losing record. My new AFC West pick is San Diego.
Why would Jake Plummer suddenly go back to his old ways? He was bad against Miami last year, but bounced back. He'll be fine until the playoffs -- that's when he'll implode.
Why would he suddenly go from his old ways to no mistake Jake last year. He's irratic and I think last year was Denver's last hoorah. Jay Cutler will be starting by season's end.
He went to No Mistake Jake because Mike Shanahan is the best coach he's ever had. With an effective running game, the Broncos will be able to roll Plummer out of the pocket again, where he is most effective. They couldn't do that against the Rams because St. Louis has a great pass rush. Plus, Denver was looking ahead. Plummer definitely bounces back this week.
Mike Bell, who never led Arizona to so much as a bowl game, is now supposed to be some great runningback? Come on.
Tatum Bell gained 103, but keep in mind that it was against the Rams. Plus, you were arguing that with an effective running game Plummer can be no-mistake Jake again, well he had an effective running game this week and he made several mistakes. I think San Diego will beat out Denver for the AFC West title.
I can't believe they nearly lost to a Trent Green-less Kansas City team, at Denver nonetheless. The Broncos are headed to their first losing campaign since '99 when they were defending champs. They have scored 19 points so far this season, 19!
1. Cincinnati (2-0) - Looks like the Bengals have a shutdown defense to go along with their potent offense. A win at Pittsburgh this week would be huge for this football team.
2. Chicago (2-0) - With that defense, imagine what the Bears can do if they start scoring 30 points a game.
3. Jacksonville (2-0) - In two weeks the Jaguars have knocked off the team who was favored to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl this year and the team who won the Super Bowl last year. That's pretty darn impressive.
4. Baltimore (2-0) - It's kind of odd to say but I was kind of disappointed that the Ravens beat the Raiders just 28-6.
5. Indianapolis (2-0) - The Colts are still scoring on the Texans "new and improved" defense.
6. Seattle (2-0) - I was impressed by Seattle's win over 'Zona. It looks like the Super Bowl Loser curse stops here.
7. Atlanta (2-0) - The Falcons are looking like a playoff team, I had them 0-2 right now before the season started.
8. New England (2-0) - No Deion Branch, no problem. The Patriots look like they will conquer the AFC East once again.
9. San Diego (2-0) - When all of us were talking about how bad the Chargers were going to be this year since they had a rookie quarterback I guess we forgot about LT.
10. NY Giants (1-1) - Big win for this team, its looking like Giants and Cowboys for the NFC East.
11. Dallas (1-1) - I wasn't overly impressed by our dominating win over the Redskins. Im glad we have a bye this week to get our heads together and figure out whats wrong.
12. Minnesota (2-0) - If the Vikings beat the Bears next week then they have to be the favorite to win the NFC North.
13. Pittsburgh (1-1) - The Steelers have no kind of a running game without Jerome Bettis, they struggled against Miami and now they did absolutely nothing against Jacksonville. They are not going to defend their title playing like that.
14. Philadelphia (1-1) - The Giants kicked the Eagles right between the legs in that game. Philly could have taken a stronghold on the NFC East with a win.
15. Buffalo (1-1) - So let me get this straight? In two weeks, the Bills have outplayed and nearly beaten New England in Foxboro and dominated the Dolphins in Miami. That's shocking.
16. New Orleans (2-0) - New Orleans is 2-0 but their record is deceiving. They've won 2 close games against 2 horrible teams.
17. Arizona (1-1) - Kurt Warner is another quarterback who should be on the hot seat. He needs to cut down on his turnovers or he is going to hold what could be a playoff team back.
18. St. Louis (1-1) - The 49ers are better now under Mike Nolan but they're still a team that the Rams should have beaten.
19. Carolina (0-2) - The Panthers are 0-2 and really their only easy game in this entire season is going to be against Cleveland in a few weeks. Other than that they have the Bucs and Saints twice, the Falcons, Ravens, Bengals, Redskins and Eagles on the road, and the Cowboys, Rams, Giants and Steelers at home. That's brutal.
20. Denver (1-1) - If Denver played any kind of a team they would be 0-2 right now. Jake Plummer needs to be replaced immediately.
21. Washington (0-2) - The Redskins should rebound once Portis is healthy but they aren't looking good right now.
22. Kansas City (0-2) - The poor Chiefs. Had Trent Green been healthy they would have claimed their first win at Denver since the year 2000 last week.
23. NY Jets (1-1) - I guess the Jets proved this week that their win in Week 1 was an abberation.
24. San Francisco (1-1) - I've got to give it to the Niners. They are much better than I thought they would be.
25. Miami (0-2) - Daunte Culpepper looks just as bad this year as he did last year. Why didn't the Dolphins go after Drew Brees instead?
26. Detroit (0-2) - The Lions lost 34-7 this week but I guess it was crazy how close they were to beating the Bears by 30, right Roy Williams?
27. Tampa Bay (0-2) - Phil Simms could quarterback this team better than Chris can.
28. Cleveland (0-2) - The Browns losing just 34-17 to the Bengals in Cincinnati was actually pretty respectable I thought.
29. Houston (0-2) - The Texans defense is worse with Mario Williams than it was without him.
30. Tennessee (0-2) - Vince Young isn't learning anything holding a clipboard and watching the Titans get destroyed every week.
31. Green Bay (0-2) - 2004 and a 10-6 record seems like a long time ago, huh? Hell, 2005 and a 4-12 record seems like a long time ago for the Packers.
