Playoff Scenarios
Permalink

I thought it would be fun to have playoff standings every week from now until Week 17, since now all of the teams are on the same par except Dallas and Philly tonight. Tomorrow I will add the NFC scenarios, but since the NFC hasnt finished yet, today I will just do the AFC. They will be more specific as the season grows older.

Playoffs

Teams that would have a bye if the season ended today have bold
Teams that would win their division if the season ended today have italic
Teams that would make the playoffs if the season ended today are underlined
The Pittsburgh Steelers- Have a 2 game lead in their division, 2 game lead in First Round Bye, and are tied for Homefield Advantage, but lead because they beat the Patriots.
The New England Patriots- Have a 2 game lead in their division, have a 2 game lead in a first round bye.
The Indianapolis Colts- Are tied for the division lead but lead the division because they have a better division record than Jacksonville.
The Denver Broncos- Are tied for the division lead but lead the division because they beat the San Diego Chargers.
The Baltimore Ravens- Are tied for their wildcard and fifth seed, but lead because of a better conference record than San Diego and Jacksonville, and they defeated the New York Jets.
The New York Jets- Are tied for the fifth seed and wildcard but would make the playoffs, because of a better conference record than the Jacksonville Jaguars, and they beat the San Diego Chargers, they are also tied for the fifth seed but would lose it because they lost to Baltimore.
The San Diego Chargers- Are tied for the wildcard but would lose it for the reasons listed above.
The Jacksonville Jaguars- "
The Cincinnati Bengals- Are 2 games behind for the wildcard lead, and 4 games behind for the divisional lead.
The Houston Texans- Are 2 games behind for the wildcard and division lead.
The Kansas City Chiefs- Are 3 games behind for the division lead, and wildcard lead.
The Cleveland Browns- Are 3 games behind for the wildcard lead, and 5 games behind for the division lead.
The Buffalo Bills- "
The Tennessee Titans- Are 3 games behind for the wildcard, and division lead.
The Oakland Raiders- "

Eliminated this week

The Miami Dolphins- Too bad the best looking symbol in the NFL is gone after only one week, but the Dolphins are 7 games behind in the division with only 7 games left, and they lost to New England and there is no way they could have a better division and conference record, so say bye-bye to the Dolphins. And mathematically, they cant have every team vying for the wildcard spot that they need to lose so many games, cant lose that many so the Miami Dolphins are completely eliminated from the Division Championship and Wildcard Championship.

A team that barely won one game so far doesnt deserve to even be mentioned, but the Niners cant win their division, and trail the wildcard by 4 games, and because of how many teams are in the hunt, because of the amount of times the teams in the hunt have to play each other, mathematically the team that makes it will have to be at least 6-10, and have a better record than San Fransisco, so add their name to the teams of despair

That's pretty good stuff. It's a shame that teams like the Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars reside in the AFC. They are much better than the Seahawks, Rams, and all of the 4-7 teams, with the exception of maybe Carolina.

It is a shame. I think the NFL might have to change their rules this season if in one conference an 11-5 team may miss it, and a 7-9 team in the NFC may make it.

PS

If Walt or anyone else wants to reply to my powerrankings or playoff scenarios can you please start a topic that sais "Reply to Joey's Scenarios" or "Reply to Joey's Rankings Week: 12" Thanks, Im not trying to be an **** I just want to keep these topics only open to this stuff.

x- clinched division
y- clinched bye
z- clinched homefield advantage

The Pittsburgh Steelers (w,x,y,z)- Have clinched everything.
The New England Patriots (w,x,y)- Have clinched everything but Homefield Advantage, which is mathematically impossible for them to do.
The Indianapolis Colts (w,x)- Have clinched the third seed, but cannot go any higher.
The San Diego Chargers (w,x)- Have clinched their division, and fourth seed and cannot go any higher.
The New York Jets- They can clinch a playoff berth with a win.
The Denver Broncos- They can clinch a playoff berth with a win. They are tied for the final playoff spot, but win it because of a better conference record than Buffalo.
The Buffalo Bills- Are tied for the final playoff spot, but lose it because of a lesser conference record than the Broncos. The only way to win the spot is to win and have Denver lose.
The Baltimore Ravens- Trail the final playoff spot by 1 game. They can win it with a win and a Denver loss, but win a tie breaker with the Bills
The Jacksonville Jaguars-  "

Playoff Predictions

The Denver Broncos (10-6) v.s The Indianapolis Colts (12-4)

I am usually very opposed to coaches sitting all of their starters in meaningless games at the end of the season. But in Tony Dungy's case I was completely for it. The Colts will play the Broncos in back to back weeks and Dungy, not wanting Mike Shannahan to know how to get the Colts in the playoffs, sat his entire starting team last week giving the Broncos a blowout victory over the Colts, and giving them a false sense of security. This one wont even be close.

TEAMS         Q1           Q2        Q3       Q4      FINAL
DEN              7             0          3         7          17
IND              10           17        14         3         44

The New York Jets (10-6) v.s The San Diego Chargers (12-4)

This is a really tough one. The Jets finished the season rather badly much like the Eagles, while the Chargers finished strong. But the Jets have a better offense, and the Chargers have a better defense. Special Teams is about even, so I look to coaching. The winningest active coach in the league, Marty Schottenheimer is pitted against one of the brightest young coaches I have ever seen in Herman Edwards. Both good, but I think Edwards will take more advantage of the Chargers weaknesses on both offense and defense.

TEAMS               Q1           Q2         Q3           Q4       OT     FINAL
NYJ                    7              3           0            14        3        27

New York Jets v.s Pittsburgh

Playoff Predictions

The Minnesota Vikings (8-8) v.s The Green Bay Packers (11-5)

The Vikings were beaten by Green Bay close two times before now, nothing is changing this time.

MIN                7         7            14            0           28

The St. Louis Rams (8-8) v.s. The Seattle Seahawks (9-7)

The Rams have already beat them twice, and the Rams are on a roll. Rams win with little difficulty.

TEAMS          Q1         Q2          Q3          Q4      FINAL
STL              10           7           10            0        27

My predictions for next week's matchups

Green Bay v.s Atlanta
St. Louis v.s Philadelphia

Eliminated this week

The Carolina Panthers- Are a game back, therefore they are eliminated.
The New Orleans Saints- Are tied for the wildcard and usually would win it because they beat St. Louis. But they got screwed. When there are more than two teams contending for a spot, apparently head to head is non applicable. So they go to conference record, where the Saints have a worse record, so the Saints get screwed out of the playoffs.

AFC Final Four

The Pittsburgh Steelers- Have Homefield Advantage.
The New England Patriots- Host the game this week, and will host the AFC Championship if they win and Pittsburgh loses.
The Indianapolis Colts- Will only host the AFC Championship if they win and the Jets lose.
The New York Jets- Cannot host the AFC Championship.

AFC Conference Semi-Finals

The New York Jets (11-6) v.s The Pittsburgh Steelers (15-1)

The Jets pulled off my upset special last week, no matter how much I wish they could pull off this one, realistically there is no way that they can knock off the 15-1 Steelers.

TEAMS         Q1             Q2              Q3           Q4        FINAL

The Indianapolis Colts (13-4) v.s The New England Patriots (14-2)

This is with no doubt the game of the week. Walt sais that the AFC Championship will be the Super Bowl, I say this is the Super Bowl. This game can go either way, but I think this is the Colt's year.

TEAMS         Q1               Q2           Q3               Q4             OT              FINAL

The Denver Broncos- Smart move calling the Colts recievers "soft" Broncos. All they did was block you like they were the Defense and score 7 Touchdowns.
The San Diego Chargers- You played like you were the underdog in Overtime.

The Minnesota Vikings (9-8) v.s The Philadelphia Eagles (13-3)

On Monday Night Football, a few months back these teams met and Philadelphia won by 9 points, but I believe that the injury to Terrell Owens will be that much of a swing.

TEAMS           Q1              Q2              Q3             Q4        OT          FINAL

The St. Louis Rams (9-8) v.s The Atlanta Falcons (11-5)

Same as Eagles and Vikes. Earlier in the season these two met and Falcons won pretty convincingly. They have had no injuries, but the Rams are riding a wave of momentum given to them by Seattle. I say the wildcard wins again.

TEAMS            Q1             Q2             Q3             Q4         OT       FINAL

Conference Championships

AFC

The New England Patriots (15-2) v.s The Pittsburgh Steelers (16-1)

This has potential to be a gridiron classic. This is the most combined wins by 2 teams ever in one game (31) and both teams are forces to reckon with. After that exciting down to the wire win I expect the Steelers to be exhausted, while the Patriots are invigorated after their surprising blowout of the Colts. So I say Patriots advance to another Super Bowl.

Walt's friends in Philly probably hate me, but I dont even think it will be close. Falcons win in a blowout, because of Philadelphia's inablity to stop the run.

The Minnesota Vikings- What an embarrassment. After that performance, I have to say Randy Moss may not even be one of the top 5 Wideouts in the league.
The St. Louis Rams- With Mike Martz roaming the sidelines, youll never win the Trophy again.
The New York Jets- I see Detroit in their future.
The Indianapolis Colts- Walt was right, you cant win a Super Bowl with that Defense that you have.

SUPER BOWL XXXIX

The New England Patriots (16-2) v.s The Philadelphia Eagles (15-3)

Someone needs to tell the Eagles that losing the Super Bowl hurts alot more than losing the NFC Championship. Eagles fans had heart attacks losing 3 NFC Championships, they will die if they lose a Super Bowl. Especially since for them it will be, "Congratulations, you got over the hump, now you have to do it all over again." The Patriots will hold Terrell Owens, if he is indeed playing to 0 catches, while Freddie Mitchell and Todd Pinkston. HA! I think the Eagles might as well forfit. While, on the other side, The Eagles 2 young safeties will be burnt bad by Bill Belichicks wide out corps. This will be the first shut out Super Bowl.
