NFL Coaches hot seat
Permalink

These are the coaches I think might be on the hot seat in 2006.

Dick Jauron (Bills)- I know it is just his first season but it is bound to be a terrible one.

Eric Mangini (Jets)- He should get more than one years chance but he has inherited a terrible, terrible team.

Brian Billick (Ravens)- Billick will inevitably be fired after a disappointing campaign this season.

Jeff Fisher (Titans)- I dont think Fisher will make it past this season. The Titans have very little talent and Vince Young needs a couple seasons to mature. I think Norm Chow takes over after this season.

Jack Del Rio (Jaguars)- The Jags are going to disappoint this season. I predict them to finish 9-7 but they could be as bad as 5-11 and if they do that, Del Rio will be fired.

Marty Schottenheimer (Chargers)- He's not going to make it past this season.

Art Shell (Raiders)- Every coach under Al Davis is on the hot seat at all times.

Tom Coughlin (Giants)- When New York starts losing, the Giants are going to rebel.

Mike McCarthy (Packers)- What a terrible choice by the Packers.

Jim Mora Jr. (Falcons)- The NFC South is getting tougher, and Mora's expectations are getting larger. I don't think that he will live up to them.

I would agree with that list, although it's hard to say that any first-year coach would get fired after just one season. Most people get at least two.

If the Falcons don't make the playoffs, I don't think Jim Mora Jr. will get fired. I don't think he's on the hot seat just yet.

I don't actually think that any of the first year coaches will be fired after this season but if Jauron or Mangini go 0-16 or 1-15 with their respective teams this season (which is a possibility for both teams) then they could be fired.

Shell is on the hot seat because who knows what Al Davis will do. The Raiders suck and apparently Davis thinks that they are a playoff caliber team the way he fires coaches right away after losing.

I wouldn't be surprised if McCarthy got fired after this season. I think he will be a Marty Mornhinweg/Rich Kotite-type bust as a head coach.

However, I do agree that coaches need at least a 2 year chance to win. The only coach in my recent memory to be fired after just one season is Marty Schottenheimer with the Redskins, which turned out to be a stupid move by Daniel Snyder.

1-15 is a possibility for those two teams, but I would never say that any team could go 0-16.

As for the Raiders, considering that no one wanted to work for Al Davis, I think Art Shell will be around for at least three years.

I only am predicting 3 coaches to actually be fired this season. I seriously considered Tom Coughlin, but I don't think the Giants would fire him the year after he led them to the championship of the toughest division in football. The coaches I think WILL be fired are-

Brian Billick- Baltimore
Jeff Fisher- Tennessee
Marty Schottenheimer- San Diego

Their replacements will be......

Jim Fassel- Baltimore
Norm Chow- Tennessee
Wade Phillips- San Diego

Billick and Fisher should get new jobs soon, but at his age, Schottenheimer would probably just leave football if he was fired at this point.

I don't see Wade Phillips getting hired to be a head coach anytime soon. Gregg Williams might get another shot.

It's a shame what happened to Jeff Fisher. He has to pay the price for general manager Floyd Reese's ineptness.

I only picked Phillips to become the Chargers' head coach because I believe he is currently a coordinator for them if my memory serves me right.

I don't think Gregg Williams was a very good head coach in Buffalo. I don't know why everyone thinks he will make such a good one now. I think that the Redskins will keep him to succeed Joe Gibbs and I think he is going to flop.

It is a shame what happened to Jeff Fisher, but I think Norm Chow might make a good NFL head coach. Chow's old boss Pete Carroll could get be hired as well. He has succeeded amazingly at SC and he actually had a winning record as an NFL head coach so he should be hired again in my oppinion, that is if he wants to come back to the NFL.

Gregg Williams didn't do a good job in Buffalo, but he didn't have much to work with. But he's still an outstanding defensive coordinator.

I think that is all he is going to amount to- a great defensive coordinator. Norv Turner was an excellent offensive coordinator and look at what he has done as a head coach.

I totally agree with that; I don't think Gregg Williams makes a good head coach. But that won't stop other teams from hiring him. Norv Turner had multiple stints as head coach.

Yeah, some owners and GMs just don't get it. Everybody's looking to get the next Bill Belichick- the great assistant coach who was terrible as a head coach in his first stint and excellent in his second. What they don't realize is that Bill Belichick was the first coach of his kind. Examples such as that don't come along all that often, in fact noone has come along like that except Belichick. Belichick completely changed his coaching technique from Cleveland to New England because he realized that he is no Bill Parcells and he cannot be the over powering figure that Parcells is. It takes a humility that most coaches don't have to do something like Belichick did.

Belichick actually took the Browns to the playoffs with the Browns. It fell apart for him because the Browns planned to move to Baltimore, which ruined the team's chances that year.

He did lead Cleveland to the playoffs but only once in his 5 years. Self-admittedly he was not at his best with the Browns. He tried to intimidate his players like Bill Parcells does because that was all he knew, but rather than be an authoritarian figure and a good coach like Parcells, he just looked like a jerk to his players.

Yeah, I think both things factored into his lack of success in Cleveland. With that in mind, Gregg Williams should get another shot. Better than Mike McCarthey, right?

I would have to agree with you on that. I still don't understand why Green Bay would hire him. Have they been in a time capsule for 15 years and didn't realize that the 49ers suck now?

The Packers have made numerous terrible decisions the past few years. I'm not surprised that they hired a dud.

Like trying to get Brett Favre to come back. I think I would have discouraged him from coming back. Now Aaron Rodgers has to sit on the bench one more year while the team he will be leading after Favre finally does retire will mature.

If the Packers are getting blown out this year, I hope they don't hesitate to yank Favre in favor of Aaron Rodgers. They need to see if this kid can play.

I agree, however, if they yanked Favre, no matter how right of a decision it is, many cheeseheads will be furious.

I think they'd understand though. Brett Favre is not the future of the Packers, and can no longer lead his team to the playoffs. You may hear some boos, but those would be from unintelligent fans.

It would absolutely be the right move but I cant see the Packers fans being happy about it. In the early 90's, it was time for the 49ers to make the transition from Joe Montana to Steve Young. It was the right time for them to do so as well, yet the San Francisco fans still screamed for Montana. Most fans just dont see the big picture. First interception that Rodgers throws and I think you will hear an outcry for Favre. The Packers are in quite a predicament.

Yeah, and that's why they'll win less than five games this year. At the beginning of the season, they should start Brett Favre to keep that consecutive-games streak alive, but once they're 2-9 or 3-8, they should make the switch to Rodgers.

I agree.
