NFL Pick-'em: Week 2
Permalink

Sunday

Houston @ Indianapolis

I was impressed by the Colts' win over New York last week. They should stomp all over the pathetic Texans. Looks like that Mario Williams pick didn't improve the defense all that much. Colts 49, Texans 20

New Orleans @ Green Bay

Looks like Mike McCarthy's offense is as bad in Green Bay as it was in San Francisco. Hey, losing him is probably what made Alex Smith look so good last week. If Reggie Bush amassed over 100 yards against Cleveland last week, he should amass over 200 this week against Green Bay. New Orleans will also want revenge after losing 52-3 to the Pack last season. Saints 31, Packers 6

Cleveland @ Cincinnati

This game will get ugly. Cincinnati struts their stuff. Bengals 41, Browns 7

Detroit @ Chicago

The Lions will be competitive in this game but can you actually see them winning in Chicago? I can't. Bears 23, Lions 14

Oakland @ Baltimore

I thought it was hilarious when in Walt's predictions he told us to sit the Raiders offense, defense, coaching staff and ownership. I couldn't agree more. Baltimore continues their dominance. Ravens 37, Raiders 0

Tampa Bay @ Atlanta

Atlanta's Week 1 win over Carolina impressed me. They will send Tampa Bay to 0-2 as Jon Gruden's seat gets a little hot and Chris Simms looks terrible again. Falcons 27, Buccaneers 10

NY Giants @ Philadelphia

Originally I had the Eagles winning this game but judging from their mere 24-10 win over Houston last week and since New York lost to Indianapolis last year I dont think that they will be wanting to drop to 0-2. Giants win a tight one. Giants 26, Eagles 23

Carolina @ Minnesota

Carolina won't want to drop to 0-2 either, too bad that they don't have much of a say in the matter. Steve Smith is questionable and Minnesota was very impressive in winning at Washington last week. I expect them to send the Panthers to 0-2. Vikings 28, Panthers 17

Buffalo @ Miami

This is my upset special this week. The Bills were impressive last week against New England and the Dolphins offense looked terrible against Pittsburgh. Daunte Culpepper plays awful and Miami starts out 0-2 after winning 6 straight to end last season. Bills 20, Dolphins 17

Arizona @ Seattle

Yes Seattle looked less than intimidating last week against Detroit but I think they were probably looking ahead to this game and other upcoming games. The Seahawks will blow away the Cards. Seahawks 34, Cardinals 17

St. Louis @ San Francisco

In a weird series of events, St. Louis was swept by San Francisco. This year's Rams are much improved and they have a coach that runs the ball. The Rams win in 'Frisco. Rams 27, 49ers 24

Tennessee @ San Diego

The Titans couldn't beat the Jets at home they sure can't beat a San Diego team that, granted it was against Oakland, won 27-0 last weeek. The Chargers beat up on the Titans. Chargers 31, Titans 10

New England @ NY Jets

This game could have major implications in the AFC East if Chad Pennington is back to '02, '04 form. Even without Deion Branch, Adam Vinatieri, or Willie McGinest. The clutch performance of Brady is enough to scratch out a win for New England. Patriots 20, Jets 17 (OT)

Kansas City @ Denver

I dont believe that the Broncos are going to bounce back as they did a year before but they will beat the lowely Chiefs at home to get off to the right start. Broncos 41, Chiefs 17

Washington @ Dallas

We've already talked about this game. The Cowboys start slow and finish hot, the opposite of last week. Cowboys 24, Redskins 7

Pittsburgh @ Jacksonville

The Jaguars stunned us last week and they will do the same to Pittsburgh this week. Regardless of Ben Roethlisberger playing or not I think the Jags win this matchup. Jaguars 20, Steelers 7

My picks are up so we can compare.

Two gripes:

The Bills are done. Their team leader Troy Vincent was put on the IR even though he'll be ready to play in November. Some of his teammates were enraged about this, and were complaining to the coaching staff. They'll be unfocused for the Dolphins, who can't afford to start 0-2.

The Texans will keep it close. This is the biggest game of the year for them (they passed on Reggie Bush because they didn't have the defense to beat Indy). The Colts don't care about this contest. They just beat the Giants on the road, and have the Jaguars coming up.

The Vincent injury is all the more reason to pick Buffalo. They'll win one for him.

I dont care how much the Texans want to win this game, they suck and are nowhere close to Indy. The Colts will blow them up much in the same way that they have beaten Houston by scores of 19-3, 30-21, 49-14, 35-17 in their only other 4 meetings in Indianapolis.

Why would the Bills win one for Troy Vincent? He's off the team. Remember when Lawyer Milloy was kicked off the Patriots prior to the season oper against Buffalo? New England was mad at its coach and was consequently blown out.

Three of those games you listed were close (by 18 or less). This will be another game decided between 10-21 points.

I wouldn't call an 18 point loss "close". Plus, the Texans are much worse now than they were in '03, '04.

Eighteen points is close when you compare the talent level of the two teams. Indy SHOULD beat Houston by 40 every time. Yet, the Texans have kept it relatively close twice. I think they'll do it again. The spread is 14. I think they can cover.

I can't see the Texans covering. Houston-Indy will be the second biggest blowout of the week next to Oakland-Baltimore, a game in which I dont foresee Oakland scoring any points while Baltimore could score in the 50s against the Raiders if they wanted to.

Texans lost by 19, but Indy's first two touchdowns were off David Carr lost fumbles. Houston had no chance to cover down 14-0 so early. Now their left tackle is out for the year. 2-14 again.

I say 3-13 and the fourth overall pick in the NFL draft behind Green Bay, Oakland, and Tennessee in that order.

Normally I say that teams can't go winless, but there are so many bad squads this year that it is possible. What do you think?

I think that its a strong possibility but I dont see it happening. I think the Packers finish 1-15, the Raiders finish 2-14 and The Titans and Texans both finish 3-13.

Whom do you have the Titans beating? I can't see them getting three wins. I think they beat Houston once, but that's about it.

I think Vince Young will get revenge on the Texans by sweeping them and then I had the Titans beating the Bills before the season started but I dont know now. They'll probably get one that they shouldn't get.

I don't think revenge applies to one person. His teammates couldn't care less that the Texans passed over him. And there's no way he wins on the road at this stage of his development.

So I guess the Bills beating the Patriots 31-0 a couple years ago had nothing to do with Lawyer Milloy, huh?

Lawyer Milloy had a great game, but I think that was more the Patriots being confused and disoriented after one of their team leaders was booted off the squad. Tom Brady threw four INTs -- you rarely see that happen.

The Bills were playing way over their heads in that game. Milloy, and Drew Bledsoe for that matter, couldn't wait to torch their former team. Revenge does apply to individuals.

I think you're forgetting the fact that the Patriots defeated the Bills like six times in a row. Buffalo needed to beat New England to get to the top of the AFC East. I don't think the Titans care about the Texans; Tennessee swept Houston last year.

The Titans dont care about Houston but Vince Young does and he'll save his best two games of the season for them. Not only did they pass him up in the draft but they are also his home town team.

I'm not sure if his "best two games of the season" will be enough. Like I've said before, I don't think he'll be a good QB in this league -- and definitely not this year.

His best two games of his rookie season will be more than enough to beat Houston.

He's going to be a star in the pros just like he was in college.

I have to keep disagreeing with you there. I think he'll be a mediocre QB if he's lucky.

And even if he does become great, he's only a rookie this year, and does not have the talent around him to win. Maybe they'll beat the Texans once, but that's it.

Vince Young doesn't have the possibility of being mediocre. With his talents, he's either going to be a huge success a huge bust. I dont find any reason to think he wont be a huge success.

The Titans swept Houston last year without Vince Young, why is it so hard for you to think that they could do it again this year?

Because Steve McNair is better than Vince Young!

Young has the scrambling ability, but he lacks accuracy and the ability to read defenses.

Steve McNair with Baltimore is. Steve McNair with a terrible Tennessee team last year is not.

Again, I dont understand why you think he lacks accuracy because he was one of the most accurate quarterbacks in College Football last year.

You're telling me that this Titans team is better off with Vince Young at QB than with Steve McNair at QB? That's crazy. With Young they win one game tops. With McNair they win about 4-5.

Of course they're not better off but they aren't so much worse off that they won't be able to beat Houston again (although they did look pretty bad against us today).

They're terrible. I'd say they were the worst team I've ever seen, but then again, there's the Oakland Raiders.

Do the Titans and Raiders play this year? If they do it would probably be a strange 6-4 score or something of the sort. I wonder how the two teams would compare with the 70's Buccaneers.

I'm sorry to report that an epic matchup between Oakland and Tennessee will not take place this year.
