Coach Approval Ratings
Permalink

On ESPN they have these coach approval ratings that I thought were pretty interesting. I figured I would share.

1. Brad Childress MIN 94%
2. Lovie Smith CHI 94%
3. Sean Payton NO 93%
4. Marvin Lewis CIN 93%
5. Dick Jauron BUF 93%
6. Mike Nolan SF 93%
7. Jim Mora Jr. ATL 93%
8. Marty Schottenheimer SD 92%
9. Jack Del Rio JAX 92%
10. Tony Dungy IND 90%
11. Brian Billick BAL 87%
12. Mike Holmgren SEA 87%
13. Eric Mangini NYJ 87%
14. Bill Belichick NE 86%
15. Tom Coughlin NYG 78%
16. Bill Cowher PIT 77%
17. Bill Parcells DAL 76%
18. Mike Shanahan DEN 60%
19. Gary Kubiak HOU 54%
20. Dennis Green ARZ 52%
21. Scott Linehan STL 48%
22. Andy Reid PHI 43%
23. Romeo Crenell CLE 40%
24. Rod Marinelli DET 39%
25. Nick Saban MIA 37%
26. Herm Edwards KC 34%
27. Joe Gibbs WSH 32%
28. John Fox CAR 31%
29. Jeff Fisher TEN 29%
30. Mike McCarthy GB 21%
31. Jon Gruden TB 20%
32. Art Shell OAK 20%

I was kind of surprised what high ratings that Marty Schottenheimer and Bill Parcells had. Both have been under fire recently.

Dennis Green only has 52%? Did Cardinal fans expect him to win in Seattle?

I cant believe that Scott Linehan's rating is so low. I was surprised by his loss at San Francisco too but that kind of just made up for him beating Denver.

Why is Andy Reid's rating so low? Walt, you live in Philly is he on the hot seat?

I think the fans should understand Romeo Crenell's circumstances. Injuries are out of his control.

Rod Marinelli has done a fine job in Detroit why is his rating so low?

The Dolphins are terribly disappointing thus far but it isn't Saban's fault, its Daunte Culpepper's. Hes the one that should be under pressure.

Do Redskins fans not remember Joe Gibbs taking a modestly talented team into the second round of the playoffs last year? Do Panthers fans not remember John Fox going to the NFC Championship Game 2 out of the last 3 years? Do Titans fans not recall all the many years of success under Jeff Fisher? Those three coaches' ratings are ridiculous, although I do think Fisher is making a mistake in not starting Vince Young.

I cant argue with McCarthy, Gruden, or Shell. McCarthy, well lets be honest he shouldn't even be a head coach in Pop Warner. Gruden has failed miserably with Chris Simms while he is supposed to be an expert at the quarterback position. And I think that Peter King described Shell's situation best last night on "Inside the NFL". He said that Shell is coaching a style of offense that was used heavily in the 60's. He has to know that that wouldn't work in today's NFL.

Some of these ratings are ridiculous. What are they based on?

Bill Belichick only 86%? What does he have to do, win eight Super Bowls in 10 years?

Bill Cowher only 77%? John Fox 31%?

Andy Reid is not on the hot seat -- he may give boring press conferences, but the majority of the people in Philly are thankful for the program he has built. Most people do think, however, he should relinquish his GM responsibilities.

They just have a poll and it asks if you think they're doing a good job yes or no. I agree that some of them are ridiculous.

I've seen these, they are basically asked every week after a game if you think the coach is doing a good job or not.

Pretty much worthless, huh? Some idiot probably clicks "no" for every coach just so he can affect the percentages.

Somehow Parcells dropped to 72% this week. I wonder what he did to lose 4 percentage points.

Belichick is just 57% now. I know this is a "What have you done for me lately?" league but is a 1-2 start after winning 3 Super Bowls in 4 years really enough for 43% of all voters to say that he's doing a bad job? That's ridiculous.

Like I said, you can't really trust that poll. Any smart fan would pick Bill Belichick over almost anyone on that list.
