I have read several articles on Walt's oppinion of the three major pregame shows, Sunday NFL Countdown (Chris Berman, Michael Irvin, Steve Young, and Tom Jackson), FOX NFL Sunday (James Brown, Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, and Jimmy Johnson), the NFL Today (Jim Nantz, Boomer Esiason, Dan Marino, and Shannon Sharpe).
My Power Rankings are...
1. FOX
2. ESPN
3. CBS
Walt often critisizes FOX, but I think that it is by far the funniest. Judging by what Walt sais I think he looks for info over comedy. I personally would rather have comedy. Terry Bradshaw is a dumbass, but he is hilarious. And getting on this show has probably damaged his reputation, and is now known as a dirty old man, but he does spice up the show. Jimmy's analysis, and Terry Bradshaw getting under Howie's skin is priceless. While James Brown lets them laugh, and laughs himself at the right time. But also stops the humor and starts the serious analysis when neccessary. I've gotta say FOX is the greatest. Plus that guy from Mad Tv. He is great. I loved his John Madden skit, but my all time favorite has to be when he was acting like all 4 of the people on the show. But I dont get Terry hitting on that weather girl all the time. Personally, I dont think she's very hot. Scoring: 9/10
ESPN is spectacular! But unfortunately for them, as long as JB, Terry, Howie, Jimmy, and the Mad TV guy are around, they will always be 2nd best. Seeing two former rivals now be on the same show is great. I loved it. One time Steve Young was talking about the Raiders and how he would be disappointed too and he said " I can't imagine the disappointment of losing in the Super Bowl. I never experienced it because everytime I went to the SuperBowl I won it." and Michael Irvin said "Yeah, us too. Only we won it 3 times." Way to go, Michael! While Chris Berman is always entertaining, he is by far the most entertaining moderator, and Tom Jackson and Chris Mortenson have the hard hitting analysis. 8/10
CBS does not have a bad pregame show as Walt said it is "respectable", but it just doesnt cut it for me. It is kind of boring. Jim Nantz is an Ok host, but I think he takes himself too seriously. Boomer Esiason has good analysis I have no problem with him. Dan Marino is also OK, but I dont understand it. On Inside the NFL, he is hilarious and he is dry on CBS. Deion Sanders is just an ego maniac, and Shannon Sharpe is Deion without the neat clothes. I give it 3 snores this year. Score: 6/10
You're right, I'll definitely go info over comedy. I like a little comedy, which ESPN provides. I also like how the ESPN pregame show is 2 hours; I can turn the TV on as soon as I wake up on Sundays, and it's football for the entire day. They cover almost every team during that span. Boom and TJ are great, while Mort gives the audience inside info that the other shows usually don't provide.
I used to love the FOX pregame show. I started watching ESPN's and now FOX is unwatchable. You're right, the weather girl isn't good looking in the slightest.
I liked CBS' pregame show because I respect Jim Nantz, since he really knows what he's talking about. Unfortunately, he and Greg Gumble have switched roles, so we'll have to see how that works out.
Really!? Jim Nantz is going to do the game, and Greg Gumbel is going to the studio? Did Jim Nantz decide to do this? I thought he was the head honcho? If he was I couldnt imagine him choosing to leave the cozy studio, to the cold, rainy, or hot field. And I too enjoy how ESPN's is two hours. But, I usually wake up at 9 and it starts at 10 here so, I have one hour that seems like 3 hours waiting for it to start. But after the 1st hour unless they are about to talk about Dallas, I turn it to FOX at 11. I take Comedy over Info. I usually already know what I need, so I dont need the info. But, I think that CBS is way too boring to watch. And, now that they do not have Deion, it wont be entertaining at all. It is like Shannon and Deion switched places. Shannon went from the field to the TV, and Deion went from the TV to the field. I think that FOX is hilarious, and my whole life Ive watched FOX, since they always covered Dallas, so I get goosebumps when I hear that music. Plus, I think Jimmy and Howie both give a fair amount of information and a fair amount of funny. Terry is 100% funny, and JB 100% info, so I think they have a good balance. But I disagree about unfortunately. I think Greg has alot more personality than Nantz does. And, youre definetly right, the weather girl looks like a whore, but Terry probably likes that look, it makes me sick. Whenever she is on I turn it to ESPN, and if ESPN is on commercial, I turn it to CBS, and only if CBS is also at commercials do I have to listen to and watch her and Terry flurt.
I don't know why Jim Nantz is doing games now. If you watched the Eagles-Ravens last night, he was in the booth. Without Nantz and Deoin, I agree, that pre-game show stinks. Greg Gumbel may have more personality than Jim Nantz, but Nantz really knows his stuff. In 2002, he predicted a Tampa Bay-Oakland Super Bowl. I give him a lot of respect for that. I'll go FOX over CBS now, but my favorite remains ESPN.
Speaking of ESPN, do you watch NFL Primetime? In my opinion, it's the best show on TV. I actually have tapes of every 2002 and 2003 Primetime
As for non-sports TV, I like some shows on FOX like 24, That 70s Show, Malcolm in the Middle, etc. I've never seen Everybody Loves Raymond. I just could never get into it.
